MODERATOR MUSINGS
Pastor Robert N. Burkins, Sr.
Moderator, The Presbytery of Newark
I greet each of you in the Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and offer my prayers and best wishes to you in this New Year!
When I was first approached by Ron Johnson indicating that the Presbytery’s Nominating Committee wanted me to consider becoming moderator of the Presbytery, I told Ron that I would pray about it before making a decision. After much thought and prayer, I agreed to allow my name to be placed in nomination.
I was reluctant at first. My plate was already full of commitments locally and nationally. Second, I face serious health challenges as I continue to live with a rare form of blood cancer. Furthermore, my experiences with Newark Presbytery have not always been positive or pleasant. I have scars that are only now beginning to heal.
I agreed to serve if elected because I love the church. I was born into the church. I have given my whole life in service to the church. I have been nurtured and supported by the church and by many who have prayed with me and for me, - strengthening me for the journey.
Not only do I love the church, but I believe in the church. Even in these dark, dismal and distressing times, I believe that the church’s best days lie ahead. I believe God is transforming the church, offering all of us an opportunity to participate in those places where God is at work. I believe the church can and will reclaim its relevance and find new and creative ways to minister to this present age. I believe the church is being tested, but, in the end, will emerge stronger than ever.
I also believe in Newark Presbytery, and in each of you. If this were not the case, I would not have accepted the nomination. I believe that we can capture a fresh vision for our life and ministry together as a Presbytery. I believe that we can put aside past hurts and deal with our differences in a way that fosters unity. I believe we can become the “beloved community”, working and witnessing to the amazing love of Jesus Christ. I believe we can become a Presbytery that is able to embrace our cultural, ethnic and theological diversity. I believe we can be a Presbytery that is so mission-minded that we don’t have time for the trite or the trivial.
I offer myself in service to you. One of my goals this year is to meet with every pastor who will give me that opportunity. I will be available to sessions when invited. I want to share in as many significant events in the life of our churches as I can. I want to be an effective moderator, a compassionate colleague, and your humble servant.
As we move forward, I ask for your prayers and need your support.
