Stay safe Before, During and After Ivan
Please refer to other blog posts on our website for more detailed emergency response information and contact numbers for disaster assistance.
Before the Storm
• Gas up your car ahead of time. In the event of widespread power outages gasoline may not be immediately available.
• For those in the track of the storm, close storm shutters or cover windows with polycarbonate panels or plywood.
• Prepare an emergency kit with a flashlight and extra batteries; extra clothing; three days of non-perishable food, water and medications; a first aid kit; and important documents.
• Find your nearest evacuation route, including an alternate.
• Make a list of important contacts, including someone outside the region who can serve as a central contact for those in the hurricane zone.
During the Storm
• When a tropical storm or hurricane warning is announced, remain indoors!
• Avoid driving unless absolutely necessary.
• Obey road closures and states of emergency.
After the Storm
• Stay inside until the hurricane or tropical storm warning has expired.
• Take pictures of any damage for your insurance company.
• Do not attempt to cross running water or standing water more than a few inches deep and avoid roads that are known to flood.
• Avoid any potentially dangerous downed lines or trees.
