Memorial West's Window with a Message

At Memorial West in Newark, the Rev. Ford Ottman married Louise Steele, the daughter of a prominent minister. Louise Steele Ottman had much of her husband’s evangelical zeal but it was much too large to be satisfied only through evangelism. She founded the King’s Daughters Society made up of many of the women of the Congregation who were active suffragettes, fought for prohibition, and were even successful in trying to better the lot of the young women who worked in their husbands’ and fathers’ and brothers’ factories, breweries, and shops. The various Church organizations continued the tradition of social outreach begun by Abby Coe which remains an important part of the Congregation’s character even today.

The enormous stained glass windows depicting "The Good Shepherd", "Gethsemane" and "The Helping Hand") were made by local Newark artisans with glass supplied by the Tiffany factories. The featured North transept window is entitled "The Helping Hand" which was the gift of the King's Daughters Society.
